ChatGPT Ads Connection

Use the ChatGPT Ads Connection to send conversion events from BlueConic to OpenAI's Conversions API for campaign measurement and attribution. The proposed connection uses hashed identifiers to associate events with advertising activity. Audience synchronization is planned for a later phase.

Connection details

Goal types: Export

Before using the connection, review OpenAI's Ad Tools Terms. Upload only first-party audience data that you have the right to use. Do not upload data you bought or received from a data broker. Give people appropriate notice, and honor opt-out so their data is not sent from BlueConic to ChatGPT Ads.

Before you begin

  • Confirm access to an OpenAI advertising account and its conversion measurement setup.

  • Obtain the account-specific API credentials required for the connection. The final BlueConic authentication method needs confirmation.

  • Identify the OpenAI Pixel ID for the destination conversion events.

  • Determine which BlueConic timeline events to export and how they map to OpenAI event types.

  • Ensure relevant profile identifiers are available for matching, such as email or external ID, and are SHA-256 hashed as required.

  • If using the browser measurement pixel alongside server-side exports, plan a shared event_id for deduplication.

Create a ChatGPT Ads connection

  1. Click Connections in the navigation bar.

  2. Click Add Connection.

  3. A pop-up window appears. Check the Show all box. Enter "ChatGPT" in the Search bar. Click ChatGPT Ads connection.

  4. The ChatGPT Ads connection page opens. You can expand or collapse metadata fields (favorite, labels, and description) by clicking the gray chevron at the top of the page.

  5. In the metadata section you can choose whether to get email notifications when the connection runs or fails to run.

  6. Save your settings.

NOTE: One connection uses one ad account. An Advertiser API key belongs to a single ad account. To use another ad account, add another ChatGPT Ads connection and enter that account's key.

Configuring a ChatGPT Ads connection

  1. Open Set up and run. Authentication has two parts. Audience sync needs only the Advertising key. Timeline-event export also needs a Pixel ID and a Conversions API key.

  2. Click Save.

Entering the Advertising key

  1. In ChatGPT Ads Manager, open Settings, then General, then API Keys.

  2. Click Create New Key. Copy the Advertiser API key. The key is shown once.

  3. In BlueConic, click Set up and run.

  4. Under Advertising, paste the Advertiser API key.

  5. BlueConic checks the key as you enter it. When the key is valid, Ad Account shows the account name in a disabled field.

The ad account id is stored on the connection when you save after the account is verified.

Entering conversion credentials

Leave Pixel ID and Conversions API key empty when this connection only syncs audiences. Enter both when you want to export timeline events. If you save with only one of the two filled in, the setup step reports an error.

  1. In Ads Manager, open the Conversions section for the same ad account.

  2. Create or copy the Pixel ID.

  3. Create or copy the Conversions API key.

  4. In BlueConic, paste both values under Conversions.

Note: The Advertising key and the Conversions API key are different keys. The Advertising key is for the ad account. The Conversions API key is for the pixel.

Creating ChatGPT Ads custom audiences

Use a BlueConic segment to keep a ChatGPT Ads custom audience up to date. This is a server-to-server match on known profiles. It does not depend on a website visit. When a profile leaves the segment, the next run removes it from the audience. No other profile data is sent.

Add a goal by clicking Add goal and selecting Sync custom audiences. Follow the steps in the goal.

  1. Profile data to match Link BlueConic profiles to ChatGPT Ads by mapping identifiers.

    • Email address. Recommended. BlueConic trims and lowercases the address, then hashes it. A value that is already a 64-character SHA-256 hash is sent as that hash.

    • Phone number. Include the country code, for example +14155552671. BlueConic keeps the leading +, removes spaces and punctuation, then hashes the number.

    • Google Advertising ID. Sent as entered. It is not hashed. NOTE: Only use identifiers you collected with the right consent.

  2. Segments and audiences Map each BlueConic segment to a ChatGPT Ads audience. Select an existing audience, or type a new name to create an empty audience when you save. The audience keeps the name you type. After the first successful run, a new audience is available in Ads Manager. Choose there whether a campaign includes or excludes that audience.

  3. Run the connection Save your settings and run the connection.

Exporting timeline events to ChatGPT Ads

Select Add goal, then Export timeline events. This goal sends events to the ChatGPT Ads Conversions API. It’s available after you save both the Pixel ID and the Conversions API key.

  1. Segment: Select a BlueConic segment. Only profiles in this segment are checked for timeline events.

  2. Select event date period: Choose which events to include:

    • Export all timeline events.

    • Export timeline events since the last run.

    • Export timeline events from the last number of days. The default is 7.

Note: The Conversions API rejects events older than 7 days and events more than 10 minutes in the future. One rejected event fails the whole batch, so the default window is the last 7 days. You can use a wider window, but older events in it can cause the batch to fail.

  3. Profile data to match: Map the identifiers ChatGPT Ads uses to recognize the person. BlueConic normalizes and hashes these values on the server before sending them. You can map:

    • Email address

    • Phone number. For conversions, BlueConic removes the leading +, punctuation, and leading zeroes before hashing. For example, +1 (415) 555-2671 is hashed as 14155552671.

    • External ID

    • First name and last name, lowercased, with spaces and punctuation removed

    • City, region, postal code, and country

    • IP address and user agent, which are sent without hashing

    • Pixel browser reference

  4. Timeline events: Choose a ChatGPT Ads event for each BlueConic timeline event type, then map the event fields. Supported events:

    • Appointment scheduled

    • Checkout started

    • Contents viewed

    • Custom. Enter a custom event name.

    • Items added

    • Lead created

    • Order created

    • Page viewed

    • Registration completed

    • Subscription created

    • Trial started

    When you map the fields:

    • Event time: Map this when the ChatGPT Ads event should use a time other than the timeline event date. Order created uses this field for the event time.

    • Event ID: Map this when you want a specific ID. Otherwise, BlueConic uses the timeline event ID.

    • Amount: A decimal amount such as 42.99 is converted to minor currency units. An integer amount is sent as is, already in minor units.

    • Action source: Defaults to web when Source URL is mapped, and to other when it isn’t. A web action without a source URL is sent as other.

  5. Run the connection: Save your settings and turn the connection on, then run it or schedule it.

Run the ChatGPT Ads connection

Tip: Add at least one goal and save before you run the connection.

  1. Turn the ChatGPT Ads connection on and click Save.

  2. Go to the Set up and run page. Scroll down to the Run history section.

  3. To start the export manually, click the Run now button.

  4. To schedule the export, click the Settings icon. Select a scheduling option from the drop-down list:

    • Number of times per day

    • Days of the week

    • Day of the month

    • Weekday of the month Set a time for the export.

  5. Click OK.

Connection status

Once you have set up and saved the connection, the icon at the top shows the status. An arrow from BlueConic to ChatGPT Ads means data is exported from BlueConic. When the arrow is green, the connection is ready to be used.

  • Data exchange shows the number of unique profiles that have been exported. If the same profile is exported more than once, it is counted as 1. A profile is skipped when it has no usable identifier for the mapped fields.

  • Run history lists each goal. A custom-audience goal reports profiles checked, added, and removed. A timeline-event goal reports profiles checked, events checked, and events exported.

FAQ

Can I use a BlueConic audience on campaigns in Europe?

  • No. ChatGPT Ads doesn’t allow audiences created through the API on campaigns that target the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. This includes audiences that BlueConic® creates.

How large does my audience need to be?

It depends on how you use it:

  • To include an audience or apply a bid multiplier: the audience needs at least 25,000 matched users.

  • To exclude an audience: there’s no minimum size.

Why doesn’t Ads Manager show the exact size of my audience?

  • To protect user privacy, Ads Manager shows a range for audience size, not an exact count
