SendGrid Connection

How do I connect BlueConic customer profile data with SendGrid lists of contacts, email subscribers, and unsubscribe groups?

What: The SendGrid connection allows you to enrich BlueConic profiles with data from SendGrid subscribers and vice versa. This connection supports scheduled batch import and export. 

With SendGrid data synchronized into BlueConic, you'll have access to activated data about list membership, unsubscribe groups, and email behavior to tailor online experiences as well.

About BlueConic: The BlueConic Customer Data Platform harnesses the data required to power the recognition of an individual at each interaction, and then synchronizes their intent across the marketing ecosystem.

Why: Interact with your email recipients with relevancy on-site, and in their inbox. By bringing SendGrid data into BlueConic or exporting BlueConic data to SendGrid contacts, you can individualize your customers' experience on-site or in-app. Use BlueConic's unique behavioral data collection engine to enable a highly relevant email program for triggered emails and campaigns.

Creating a BlueConic connection to SendGrid

  1. Click Connections in the BlueConic navigation bar.
  2. Click Add Connection.
  3. A pop-up window appears. Enter "SendGrid" in the Search bar.
  4. Click SendGrid connection.
    The SendGrid connection page opens. You can expand or collapse the metadata fields (favorite, labels, and description) by clicking the chevron at the top of the page.
  5. In the metadata section you can choose whether to get email notifications when the connection runs or fails to run.
  6. Enter a name for your connection at the top of the page and Save your settings.

Configuring a SendGrid connection with BlueConic

Setting up a SendGrid connection

  1. Select Set up and run in the Setup section in the left panel.
  2. Click the Connect with SendGrid button.
  3. Enter your SendGrid API key.

To make the connection work, you need to create at least one import or export goal, save your changes, switch the connection on at the top of the page, and schedule it to runIn an import or export goal, you specify how data from BlueConic should be linked and mapped to SendGrid. The next sections walk you through each step.

In the Data exchange section of the Set up and run page, you can see the number of unique profiles that have been imported or exported via the connection. Note that these are unique profiles -- for example, if the same profile is exported multiple times, it is counted only once.

Run history: This table appears after you save the connection. Here you can schedule the connection to run on certain days, at certain times. See Scheduling connections for details.

Importing SendGrid data into BlueConic

In the left-hand panel, click Add goal and choose Import goal and then follow the steps on screen.

  1. Select SendGrid lists to import data from.
    Optional: When you choose a list of contacts to import, you can specify whether to allow BlueConic to create new profiles for contacts that do not already have a profile.
    Optional: You can specify whether to save the name of the SendGrid list these profiles are imported from, and select or create a profile property to store this information.

  2. Link identifiers between SendGrid and BlueConic.
    This step determines how contacts in SendGrid are matched to profiles in BlueConic. If no match is found, BlueConic will either create a new profile (if you selected the "Allow" checkbox in step 2) or the contact will not be imported.

  3. Map SendGrid data to BlueConic profile properties.
    Here you choose which SendGrid fields map to BlueConic profile properties and how to add them.

    You can select how to import the data from the Set drop-down menu:

    • Set
    • Set if empty
    • Set or clear the value in the profile property if the import contains no value for this field.
    • Add the data field to the list of existing values.
    • Sum a number with the existing values (if the data field is a number).
  4. Run the connection.

Importing SendGrid unsubscribe groups into BlueConic

To import data about SendGrid unsubscribe groups into BlueConic, click Add goal and choose Import unsubscribe goal in the left-hand panel, and follow these steps:

  1. Select the BlueConic email identifier.
    Unsubscribes in SendGrid are linked to an email address. Enter a mapping rule(s) to match profile properties in BlueConic with the SendGrid email address.
  2. Map SendGrid unsubscribe data to BlueConic profile properties.
    Here you can map the SendGrid fields for the Unsubscribe Group Name and Unsubscribe Group ID to the corresponding BlueConic profile properties.

    You can use these profile properties to create BlueConic segments containing members of these unsubscribe groups for messaging or targeting. 

Exporting data from BlueConic to SendGrid

To export BlueConic profile data to SendGrid lists, click Add goal and choose Export goal in the left-hand panel, and follow the steps laid out in the export goal.

  1. Select a BlueConic customer segment to export profile data from.
  2. Link identifiers between BlueConic and SendGrid.
    If no match is found for a BlueConic profile, a new SendGrid contact will be created.

  5. Run the connection.

Running a SendGrid connection

Once you save your settings and turn the connection on at the top of the page, you can run the connection. The green arrows at the top of the page turns green to show the connection has been authenticated and configured correctly.

Open the Set up and run page to run the connection. The Run history table appears after you save the connection. You can click Run now or use the settings to schedule the connection to run on certain days, at certain times, up to 24 times per day. See Scheduling connections for details.

Privacy management

Connections can be added to Objectives, allowing for privacy management of the information that is being picked up. A connection will only process the profiles of visitors who have consented to at least one of the objectives the connection is linked to.
