How to connect Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder to BlueConicWhat: With the Salesforce Marketing Cloud connection in BlueConic, you can send events to the Journey Builder API to create personalized interactions and direct a user's journey in Journey Builder based on BlueConic profile events and data. You can add customers to a journey in real time and uses batch exports to remove users from journeys.

About BlueConic: The BlueConic customer data platform harnesses the data required to power the recognition of an individual at each interaction, and then synchronizes their intent across the marketing ecosystem.

Why: By sending BlueConic profile data to Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder, you can trigger customer journey events based on data from BlueConic, to create more personalized interactions in Journey Builder. By using the unique behavioral data collection engine in BlueConic, you can enable highly relevant marketing programs for triggered emails and campaigns.

How the Journey Builder Connection works

You can use the BlueConic connection to Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder to export BlueConic profiles to Journey Builder if a particular profile property changes. This enables you to use BlueConic information to determine if a user should be added to a journey that you have defined in Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder.

The BlueConic profile property you select serves as a trigger to add a profile to a journey in Salesforce Marketing Cloud. You can also specify that users should be removed from a journey if their profile is no longer part of a segment or lifecycle stage you specify.

Follow the steps below to create a connection, authenticate your connection to Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder, create at least one export goal, where you match identifiers and map the data export to a journey, and then run the connection.

Required permissions: To use the Journey Builder connection in BlueConic, you must have permissions for Salesforce Marketing Cloud and for Journey Builder to access email subscriber data with the "journeys_read" permissions. See the Salesforce documentation for details.

Configuring a Journey Builder Connection

To authenticate the connection between BlueConic and Journey Builder, you'll need your Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder subdomain (for example, email.your-domain.com), client ID, and client secret. You can retrieve your Salesforce Marketing Cloud client ID and client secret from your Salesforce Marketing Cloud environment.

Setting up the connection in BlueConic

In the Journey Builder connection you created in BlueConic, click Set up and run in the left-hand panel.

  1. In the Authentication section, enter your Salesforce Marketing Cloud subdomain for Journey Builder.
The subdomain resembles the one used in the Salesforce Marketing Cloud (FTP) connection, for example "mcz8xnd5n73yxvr69cvs3nfqb4l4".
  2. Enter your Salesforce Marketing Cloud client ID and client secret.

Data exchange shows the number of profiles exported via the connection.

Next you establish goals for the data export.

  3. Specify a Journey Builder event definition key.
In the Journey dropdown, select the journey as defined in Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder.
Note: In order for a journey to appear in this dropdown menu, you need to tag it as 'BlueConic' in Journey Builder. See the Salesforce documentation for details on creating and applying tags to a journey.
Use the checkbox below the Trigger if you want to remove users from the journey if they are no longer part of the segment you selected above, in Step 1.
  4. Match identifiers between BlueConic and Journey Builder.
Select a BlueConic profile property and a Journey Builder data field from the drop-down lists to link the exported data together. The ID you select in BlueConic should match the ContactKey in Journey Builder.
