Data sensitivity and visibility settings for PII

For cases where customer data points stored in BlueConic contain personally identifiable information (PII), you can specify the data sensitivity for data being stored in profile properties, groups, and Timeline events. Data visibility settings enable organizations to control access to PII data in BlueConic based on user role.

PII refers to information that can potentially identify individuals, such as data that serves as a unique identifier for your customers and visitors. Examples include email address, ID numbers, or other information that can be used to identify an individual.

Defining data sensitivity for profile properties, groups, and Timeline event types

When BlueConic profile properties, groups, and Timeline event types are first set up, you can specify which items are unique identifiers and whether items will contain PII or non-PII.

Notes on data sensitivity and PII

  • The default setting for new items is non-PII (except for unique identifiers, which are always set to PII).
  • When you specify that a profile property is a unique identifier, its data sensitivity automatically changes to PII and its permission level is set to Level 2.
  • For profile properties and groups, you can change Non-PII data types to PII. You can only change the data sensitivity for profile properties and groups from PII to Non-PII if there are no values saved to them yet.
  • For Timeline event types, you can always change an event type's data sensitivity from Non-PII to PII, but you cannot change it back to PII after saving your settings.

User roles and PII

BlueConic uses role-based access to data in the platform. User roles can be set to allow visibility of data with data sensitivity set to PII.

Select Roles from the BlueConic Access management menu to open the Roles page. The Data visibility setting controls whether a BlueConic role can access PII data stored in profiles, groups, and Timeline events in the platform.

If your user role allows access to PII, you will be able to search and view unique identifiers and PII customer data in profile properties, groups, and Timeline events.

However, if your user role does not include access to PII, you will not be able to view or edit PII customer data. This includes data stored in BlueConic unique identifiers and will also affect insights and dashboards that display PII. (You will still be able to search for profiles using PII properties; all matching results will be visible, yet individual PII values will be hidden.)

Note: Your user role is defined and controlled by your BlueConic Application Manager; that person can answer questions about your data access privileges. For more information, review the article BlueConic Roles.

Tip: If you want BlueConic Customer Support to have access to PII for troubleshooting purposes, make sure to first give them access to your tenant via BlueConic Settings > Access management and then navigate to BlueConic Support from the Roles page and enable the Access to PII checkbox.
